Nourishing a Growing Family

My thoughts and reflections on raising a natural family in the modern world … inspired by personal experiences, daily life, and others’ writings and reflections.

Introduction

By Maria

Hello! I am an at-home mother of three beautiful children. My husband and I were both raised on farms for a portion of our childhoods, but our own journey to a more natural way of life began when we had our first child at a birthing center and in ernest about a year ago when we read Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions and began drinking raw milk.
We are currently reading “Deep Economy” “Little House on a Small Planet” and several other books that continue to challenge our philosophies and inspire our way of life.
We are renovating a cabin in the Shenandoah Valley area, which is smaller than our current home, and hope to move in by summer’s end. We look forward to purging our material possessions and embarking on a more simple lifestyle.

  1. Welcome Maria! Your family sounds very lucky to have you as their loving matriarch. I’m looking forward to hearing of your adventures. I’m especially looking forward to hearing more about Deep Economy. There are a group of permaculturists local to me who are practising what they call Deep Ecology. I wonder if the two merge in any way. Little house on a Small Planet sounds great also. I think the new American Dream (and Australian, European etc) is to down size and simplify. Karen Fergusen of Food for Thought has a dream to live in a yurt like the one coming to live in our little village. She’d probably enjoy your posts, mightily.

Your sharing your journey will probably inspire many to follow your example. Thanks for joining us Maria. Blessings, Joanne.

  2. Thank you, Joanne! A big ditto to this: “I think the new American Dream (and Australian, European etc) is to down size and simplify.”
While the mainstream has not caught on, there seems to be a growing realization that, as the author of Deep Economy points out, “more” no longer equals “better” in the developed world. I look forward to being a part of this online community. Thank you!
